What Is a Dental Emergency?

The most important thing to keep in mind is to trust your instincts. If you feel as though you’re experiencing an emergency, you’re probably right! If you’re still not sure whether you should rush to the dentist, here are a few examples of common dental emergencies:

  • A broken or badly chipped tooth.
  • Severe tooth pain.
  • A tooth that is bleeding heavily.
  • A tooth that has been knocked out or loosened.
  • A lost or broken filling or crown.

Any of these are cause to call your dentist. We’ll always see you as quickly as possible in case of emergency!

What Should I Do During a Dental Emergency?

The first step is to call your dentist at Paladin Dental. We will be able to schedule an appointment for you and give advice that’s specific to your needs.

In general, it’s safe to apply a cold compress to an area that hurts or is swollen. If you’re cleaning or stopping blood, make sure you’re using a clean fabric that doesn’t leave debris behind, such as gauze.

If you’ve lost a tooth completely, save the tooth and bring it in to the dentist with you. Store the tooth in your cheek or in milk—not water—if it’s too painful to keep the tooth in your mouth.
